Mykola Myklukha-Maklay a Ukrainian explorer is better known to the Ukrainian public because several books about him had been recently written and published.
The Myklukha family was well-off and had an estate in the village of Malyna near Kyiv. They sent their son to get education at St. Petersburg and Leipzig Universities. Mykola Myklukha-Maklay got a sufficient education which gave him an opportunity to do geological prospecting in the land of Polissya. But most of all he is is known for his expeditions to New Guinea, Malau Peninsula and islands of the Mallesia. His studies of the Bapna people were a considerable contribution to ethnography. Thanks to his talent of winning the trust of the people he dealt with, Myklukha-Maklay managed by his openness, compassion and easy going behaviour to make himself accepted even by the wildest savaged, recent cannibals. Unfortunately, he didn't have time to publish the results of his studies. More than 160 works were left in manuscripts, pictures and schemes. The most interesting ones deal with anthropological issues concerning the population of New Guinea.
