The purpose of environmentally-friendly buildings is to decrease the quantity of waste material. If a building is designed well, the amount of waste produced by people living in it will be high thanks to on-site solutions such as compost bins. Furthermore, a building is usually demolished at the end of its life and most of the waste is taken to landfills, but now, thanks to eco-design, some material is kept and used again, with few advantages: recycling materials that are still usable (for example, bricks) and reducing waste. Also waste water from dishwashing or washing machines can be used again, for irrigation, and rainwater can be collected for a number of useful purposes.
