Most people believe Pele is the most successful player in the history of football (soccer). He was born in Tres Coracoes,
in Brazil. His family was very poor and when he was a boy, Pele couldn't afford soccer shoes. But his didn't hurt when he
played - he played barefoot! To make money, he shone other people's shoes. Pele made his international debut when he was 16, and at 17 he competed for Brazil in the 1958 World Cup Final. He scored two goals in the 5-2 win over Sweden. He won a second winner's medal in 1962 and a third in 1970. He played most of his career at Santos (1956-1974) and then with the New York Cosmos (1975-77). He played in 1, 363 first-class games (1955-1977) and scored 1,281 goals. In 1980 the sports world voted him "athlete of the century", and in Brazil he is a national hero.
