British students who study a foreign language in secondary school take national exams that include a speaking task. This task is mandatory and counts for 25% of the grade, so students have to invest time and energy preparing. There is a great demand for extra help to get students ready for their oral exam. Arrangements have been made for foreign university students studying in the UK for an academic degree to go into classrooms in disadvantaged areas. They talk with the British students in the language they are studying and so far, the feedback has been very positive. The British students say that they enjoy talking with someone close to them in age. For the assistance they give, the university students are happy to receive a fee of 10 pounds an hour, which helps them cover their expenses while studying in the UK.
