Вправа 1 (Grammar: Second conditional)

1. Read the examples. Then complete the rules with the correct words. / Прочитайте приклади. Потім доповніть правила правильними словами.

Приклади:
1. If everyone did a politician's job for a day, they'd be amazed.
2. If you could do any job for a day, what would it be?
3. I would do this job every day if I could.
4. I'd go mad if I were a head teacher permanently.

Правила:

  1. We use the second conditional to talk about an unlikely or impossible situation in the present or future, and its results.
  2. We form the second conditional with: if + past simple, and would + infinitive.
  3. The short form of would is 'd.
  4. We can use were instead of was in the if clause of the second conditional.
  5. The if clause can come first or second in the sentence.

My partner, Anna, said that if she were a journalist, she would write about sport. She said that if she could do any job for a day, she would be a singer. She also said she wouldn't be bored if she lived near the sea. (Моя партнерка, Анна, сказала, що якби вона була журналістом, вона б писала про спорт. Утворені іменники (Nouns formed):

  • act (грати) → actor (актор) - (вже в рамці)
  • art (мистецтво) → artist (митець) (-ist)
  • music (музика) → musician (музикант) (-ian)
  • reception (рецепція) → receptionist (реєстратор) (-ist)
  • clean (прибирати) → cleaner (прибиральник) (-er)
  • run (бігти) → runner (бігун) (-er)

Граматика: Second Conditional (Другий тип умовних речень)

На цій сторінці ми вивчаємо Другий тип умовних речень. Ми використовуємо його для опису гіпотетичних, уявних або малоймовірних ситуацій у теперішньому або майбутньому, а також їхніх уявних наслідків.

Формула (Впр. 1, 3):

If + Past Simple, ... would + infinitive (V1)

Або

Would + infinitive (V1) ... if + Past Simple

Приклади:

  • If I won the lottery (малоймовірна умова), I would buy a big house (уявний результат).
  • I wouldn't be so stressed (уявний результат) if I didn't have so much homework (уявна умова).

Особливості (Впр. 1, 4):

  • 'If I were...' (Впр. 1, 4): У Другому типі умовних речень для 'I/he/she/it' замість 'was' часто (особливо у формальному стилі та в фразі "на твоєму місці") використовується 'were'.
    "If I were you, I'd get a job as a babysitter." (На твоєму місці я б...).
  • НЕ використовуйте 'Would' в 'If'-частині: (Впр. 4) 'Would' ставиться *тільки* в основній частині (результат), а не в умові.
    Неправильно: If I would see...
    Правильно: If I saw...
  • Could: 'Could' може замінити 'would', щоб виразити можливість/здатність (If I could live anywhere... - Впр. 3.5), або 'would be able to'.

Лексика: Суфікси професій (Vocabulary: Suffixes -er, -or, -ist, -ian)

Вправа 1 (Vocabulary) показує, як іменники або дієслова перетворюються на назви людей/професій за допомогою суфіксів:

  • -er: teach → teacher, clean → cleaner, run → runner
  • -or: act → actor, direct → director
  • -ist: art → artist, reception → receptionist, journal → journalist
  • -ian: music → musician, politics → politician
